Terry A. Wilson’s Biography: Artist History and Inspirations
Welcome to my website! My name is Terry A. Wilson and I am of the Dine (Navajo) tribe. My maternal clan is Zuni Edgewater and paternal clan is Honeycomb Rock People.
Artist History
I began carving wood in my early teens. Later, I developed skills and an artistry that I, then, applied to carving stone sculptures. For the past couple of decades, I have been carving stone sculptures of various densities and mineral compositions to create unique pieces that, I believe, honor my Native heritage. Each piece of my artwork is made from natural stone that is finely detailed with a sense of movement. The beauty of nature is displayed in a finished piece.
Inspirations
I am inspired by wildlife ecology and photography, martial arts, renowned artists from the Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Japanese Netsuke as well as European art since the Renaissance. I am also inspired by my father, who was a silversmith and strong sketch artist, and my wife and two beautiful children.
My son, Jacob Wilson, has recently decided to follow in my footsteps and carve animals. He has his own style, but also incorporates a lot of detail and a sense of movement.
